A Tradition of Dialogue
Engaging with local communities

We have a long tradition of communicating and working closely together with the local communities and do our best to work and live harmoniously with our neighbours. To promote greater understanding, we make it a point to engage in dialogue with forest dwellers before we enter to operate in areas which are inhabited, so as to prevent any misunderstanding, and in so doing ensure smooth operations.

We have a team of community affairs officers, most of whom are from indigenous groups, who look into the needs and livelihoods of these communities living within our concession areas.

“Communities welcome help from Samling because it allows them to have an improved life. Samling helps to meet their basic needs and access to medical treatments, saving lives."

Stewart Paran
Community Affairs Officer

He is a Kelabit who spent over 30 years as a headmaster and teacher, responsible for bringing education to Penan children living in the forest. He joined Samling after retiring and negotiates on behalf of Samling through community dialogue.
